Quick answer

In Saudi Arabia, every overtime hour is paid at 150% — the hourly wage plus 50% of the basic wage (Article 107). Crucially, overtime is calculated on the full wage (basic salary plus allowances), not basic pay alone. There is no separate night rate: daytime, night, rest-day and public-holiday overtime are all 150%. The hourly rate is your full monthly wage ÷ 30 ÷ your daily working hours. The employer may instead grant compensatory paid leave with your consent.

How Saudi overtime works

Article 107 of the Saudi Labor Law sets a single overtime rate: the worker is paid the hourly wage plus 50% for each additional hour — a flat 150%. This applies to all overtime, including work on rest days and public holidays.

Guidance from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) is that overtime is based on the full wage — basic salary plus allowances — so basing it on basic pay alone under-pays the worker and is a common source of labour claims. This is the key difference from the UAE, where overtime is on basic pay only.

Standard hours are 8 a day or 48 a week (reduced during Ramadan for Muslim workers). Additional hours may not exceed 720 in a year without the worker’s consent. The employer may, with agreement, give compensatory paid leave instead of overtime pay.

How overtime pay is calculated

  1. 1

    Find your hourly rate

Full wage (basic + allowances) ÷ 30 ÷ normal daily hours (usually 8).

  2. 2

    Apply the 150% rate

Every overtime hour, day or night, is paid at 1.5× the hourly rate.

  3. 3

    Multiply by hours

    Hourly rate × 1.5 × overtime hours.

Worked examples

SAR 8,000 wage, 3 overtime hours

  • Full wage: 6,000 basic + 2,000 allowances = SAR 8,000
  • Hourly: 8,000 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = SAR 33.33
  • 33.33 × 1.5 × 3 = SAR 150
Overtime paySAR 150

SAR 8,000 wage, 8 rest-day hours

  • Hourly: SAR 33.33
  • 33.33 × 1.5 × 8 = SAR 400
Overtime paySAR 400

Frequently asked questions

Is overtime calculated on basic or full salary in Saudi Arabia?

On the full wage — basic salary plus allowances — under Article 107. Unlike the UAE, which uses basic pay only, Saudi overtime includes allowances; calculating it on basic alone under-pays the worker.

What is the overtime rate in Saudi Arabia?

A flat 150% of the hourly wage for every overtime hour under Article 107 — the hourly wage plus 50% of the basic wage.

Is night overtime paid more in Saudi Arabia?

No. Unlike the UAE, Saudi law has no separate night premium — all overtime, day or night, is paid at 150%.

How is my hourly rate worked out?

Divide your full monthly wage (basic + allowances) by 30, then by your normal daily working hours (usually 8).

Can my employer give time off instead of overtime pay?

Yes, with your consent the employer may grant compensatory paid leave in lieu of the overtime wage — a flexibility confirmed in the 2025 labour-law amendments.
