Quick answer

In Bahrain, an indefinite-term contract can be ended by either party with at least 30 days’ written notice, unless the contract sets a longer period (Bahrain Labour Law No. 36 of 2012, Art. 99). Where notice is not served, pay in lieu is calculated on the full wage: daily wage = monthly wage ÷ 30.

How notice works in Bahrain

For an indefinite-term contract, either the worker or the employer may end it by giving written notice of not less than 30 days. The parties can agree a longer notice period in the contract, but not a shorter one. The party who ends the contract without giving the required notice must pay the other compensation.

That compensation — pay in lieu of notice — equals the wage for the un-served notice period, calculated on the full wage, with the daily rate taken as monthly wage ÷ 30. It is separate from the leaving indemnity (end-of-service) and any unused-leave payment.

Other points

  • Notice must be in writing; you continue to work and be paid during the notice period unless paid in lieu.
  • Fixed-term contracts normally run to their end date; ending one early can trigger separate compensation.
  • Ending a contract without a valid reason can amount to unfair dismissal, with additional compensation under the law.

How to calculate pay in lieu of notice

  1. 1

    Find your notice length

30 days, or the longer period set in your contract.

  2. 2

    Work out the daily wage

Divide your monthly wage (most recent full salary) by 30.

  3. 3

    Multiply

Daily wage × notice days = the notice-period allowance owed.

Worked examples

BHD 600 wage, 30 days’ notice

  • Statutory notice → 30 days
  • Daily wage: 600 ÷ 30 = BHD 20
  • 20 × 30 = BHD 600
Pay in lieu of noticeBHD 600

BHD 900 wage, contract sets 60 days

  • Contract notice → 60 days
  • Daily wage: 900 ÷ 30 = BHD 30
  • 30 × 60 = BHD 1,800
Pay in lieu of noticeBHD 1,800

Frequently asked questions

What is the notice period in Bahrain?

At least 30 days for an indefinite-term contract, from either the worker or the employer, unless the contract sets a longer period (Bahrain Labour Law 36/2012, Art. 99).

How is pay in lieu of notice calculated in Bahrain?

It is the wage for the un-served notice period on the full wage: daily wage = monthly wage ÷ 30, multiplied by the number of notice days.

Can I resign without serving notice in Bahrain?

You can, but the party ending the contract without the required notice owes the other a notice-period allowance for the remaining days.

Does the 30-day notice apply to fixed-term contracts in Bahrain?

The 30-day rule governs indefinite-term contracts. A fixed-term contract normally runs to its end date; ending it early can trigger separate compensation, so check your contract.

Is notice pay separate from the leaving indemnity in Bahrain?

Yes. Pay in lieu of notice, the leaving indemnity (end-of-service) and unused-leave encashment are three separate parts of your final settlement.
